A successful Auckland real estate company Barfoot & Thompson, celebrated 90 years of business with a $2 million donation to the City.
With Auckland suffering a homeless crisis, rough sleepers at a record high and affordable housing almost nonexistent, how did the City spend the $2m gift?
They spent $1m of it (also injecting a further $500,000 of council funds) on a public artwork – a replica state house (i.e. public housing) that cost a total of $1.5m that now sits on our waterfront, empty.
The artwork and artist, Michael Parekowhai has been hailed as a triumph.
Our city is screwed.
